HALF DAY EXCURSION:  MAWSON’S TREASURES
Sunday JULY 26th 2026 11 am - 1 pm
Sir Douglas Mawson (5 May 1882 – 14 October 1958) is best known for his adventures in Antarctica. However, his best geological work happened in the Flinders Ranges and in mainland Australia. He was an avid collector of minerals, fossils and meteorites. We will explore his early stratigraphic work in the Flinders Ranges and how it compares to the modern stratigraphy. You will be able to see the samples he picked himself!

From matching coastlines to moving plates: a scientific detective story

Thursday 2nd July 2026 at 7.00 pm
Forget Sherlock Holmes, Poirot and the rest! For a truly exciting detective story, that of the elucidation of Plate Tectonics takes a lot to beat. It is a story full of clues: clues that were ignored or misinterpreted, clues that led up wrong tracks or to dead ends and those, sometimes stumbled across by accident, that eventually led to the solution. This talk will take you through this story and introduce some of the “detectives” along the way.
